What in the world is a sidecar investment and how does it help you build your portfolio? Well the "what" is simple... a sidecar investment is a mechanism for an investor to increase their position on a single asset within a fund.  This is beneficial for the fund and the investors for several reasons:

  • sidecars allow a fund to maintain diversity across assets while not passing on a great investment that would otherwise exceed the maximum individual allocation within the fund
  • investors in the fund can take a stronger position in deals that they like - or over index across an asset class if they prefer
  • the fund is stronger because capital can be spread across more deals which creates more diversity, less risk, and more frequent capital events
